Here’s a quick bonus project for you this month! These are what I whipped together last night for my kids’ teachers. They got these cute handmade coffee cozies with a gift card to Starbucks:
Here’s what you’ll need:
Felt in a variety of colors (I prefer wool felt, but craft felt will do)
A sewing machine (You can hand-stitch if you like)
Embroidery floss
Pinking shears
This pattern (you can also just take a paper coffee sleeve, undo it, and trace and cut it out)
Here’s what you’ll do:
(for one cozy)
- Trace the pattern on two contrasting colors of felt, and cut it out using the pinking shears
- Sew the two sides together (I used my trusty sewing machine but you could hand-stitch these).
- Cut a heart, star or other shape from the scrap felt and hand-stitch to the outside of the sleeve (you get to decide what’s “outside” depending on which color you like better) using embroidery floss.
- Hand-stitch the sleeve together in a cylinder using the embroidery floss.
- Stand back and admire your work. Darn, you’re good!
If you were doing one of these, it would take about 15 minutes. I did seven in the period of watching two episodes of The Apprentice (with time off to marvel at The Donald’s orangey skin — does he not own a mirror??).
You could also use other fabric, use batting to insulate them, sew on snaps or velcro as a closure, and adorn them with Tinkerbell’s fairy dust. But I didn’t have that much time. 😉
P.S. I’m thinking you could make these out of cardstock, too… Someone try it and tell me how it goes!
