Show of the Day: Rent (1996)

Rent is loosely based on the Puccini opera La Bohéme and concerns a year in the life of a group of bohemian friends living in the East Village. They fall in love, learn about life, deal with HIV and AIDS, get mired in drug abuse, and change their lives in various ways. The show is a rock musical with music, lyrics, and book written by Jonathan Larson, who died suddenly the night before the off-Broadway premiere. The show proved to be so popular that it soon moved to a larger theater on Broadway and received many awards. It was nominated for ten Tony Awards and won four, including Best Musical, and also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This show was the first to reserve seats for sale by lottery two hours before the show. They sold for $20 each, thus beginning rush ticket policies by most Broadway shows to make theater accessible to people who may not be able to afford the ticket prices.

Choose Your Prompt (or do both):

Featured Designer:

Our featured designer today is Barbara McCracken.

After receiving the prompt around the musical Rent, I knew I wanted to make my layout of my two besties; Jennifer and my sister, Teresa.  They are the first people I call in a when i want to share my best and worst news.  They don’t judge and they have my back.  We often get together to scrapbook and most often, we forget to take photos.  These photos were taken at about midnight after we had packed up but realized the we had not documented the day.  I had been wanting to use my Simple Stories Crafty Girl paper pack and stickers for some time and these photos, along with the prompt of friendship made a match!  My paper pack was 6 X 8 and didn’t layout well with the two photos so I hand-cut out each letter in the word ‘create’ from the back ground paper.   Then I used pop-dots to make the letters stand out on a paper strip cut from the same paper as the photo mat.  Then I used many of the stickers from the Crafty Girl set.  The photos are from my old iPhone, and they are a bit grainy but I wouldn’t trade them for anything.  Love these amazing women.

Journaling reads: Jenn and Teresa have been there for me through my toughest times.  I met Jenn in Newport, RI when the US Navy made up next door neighbors.  Moves and deployments kept us apart but we stayed in touch and now the have been together in VA since 2004.  Teresa is the best baby sister a girl can have.  She gets me!  Great to have a fun day with these two amazing women.
